Elon Musk has offered free internet to a certain group of customers in the US. The enigmatic South African business tycoon has had some seriously bad PR in the past few months. However, Starlink, one of his flagship companies, have offered a free internet service to a select group of customers. With the current perceived reputation of Elon Musk at an all time low, could this be just the move he needs to get his reputation back into the worlds good graces? Or is this yet another marketing scheme to distract us?
Why is Elon Musk giving America free internet?
Starlink is the company behind the free internet give away, in association with T-Mobile. Starlink began launching satellites into space in 2019 and since then has dominated the sector. They currently have more than 7000 satellites orbiting the earth. Every aspect of our lives are influenced by the network of Starlink satellites above our unknowing heads.
Nearly 12,000 satellites are planned to be deployed, with a possible later extension to 34,400. They have made deals with nearly every major government in the world to provide telecommunications services. They even help Ukraine in their war with Russia, providing crucial communications for the Ukrainians. Something that has come into question recently in the political arena.
With Elon Musk making the questionable decision to enter the American political arena, his reputation and that of his companies have taken a toll. But that hasn’t stopped Musk from giving his opinion on a range of topics. His appointment as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency(DOGE) has led to a huge public backlash, particularly in the more red of the US states.
How is Elon Musk able to give away free internet? And for how long?
The campaign is made possible by utilizing Starlink’s network of satellites and connecting them to the T-Mobile network in the United States. Offering any T-Mobile customer free text messages and internet for a limited time. We knew there had to be a catch. So the idea is to give you a taste of their amazing network and then charge you after you have become used to it?
In essence, yes. The service will be offered to existing Go5G Next (including variations like Go5G Next 55+) plan customers for free until July 2025. After that if you want to continue using the Starlink network, a $15 monthly fee will be charged. Starlink have stated that the service will also be available to Verizon and AT&T customers, it will cost $20 a month per line when the service launches in July.
The technology sector has been the driving force behind most of the world’s discoveries. The question that remains is, is this just a feeble attempt by a man in over his head to distract us from his true intentions?Regardless, the free services will no doubt be welcomed in areas where traditional communications have failed. The network is impressive and will have a positive effect on millions of people.
Can the world believe anything that Elon Musk says nowadays?
Elon Musk has made some truly remarkable claims in his career. From getting us to Mars, to the Cybertruck being bulletproof, he is known to stretch the truth in the pursuit of headlines. The collective co-operation by supposed enemies must have Musk questioning how long Starlink can hold its grip on the technology sector. When the free service ends in July, will the T-Mobile customers choose to pay the extra charge or simply stick to what they have at the moment? The questions to these and many other questions regarding Musk will soon be answered. What happens next is anyone’s guess.
